Rut(t)an(t) family notes

Found in the archives in Saint-Mihiel:

Several members of the French Medullary Study Group are investigating the (family Rutant [various spellings]) which originated in Neuchatel en Bray, Normandie and migrated all over France. An attempt has been made to identify and contact all family members. They have been evaluated for the presence of hyperparathyroidism, phaechromocytoma and MTC. All sibs, affected or unaffected are also typed for HLA-DR.

MTC stands for medullary thyroid carcinoma. This study group is still active, having published at least as recently September 2001. Address: French Medullary Study Group (GETC). Department of Endocrinology, Avicenne Hospital AP-HP, University of Paris, Bobigny, France.

This family was/is very large. For example, in the city of Saint Mihiel between 1586 and 1599 the following Ruttan fathers are listed in the baptism records:

Most of those lines remained in the Saint Mihiel area. One, Claude (born 1590), moved to Metz by 1613. One of his great grandchildren, Abraham, migrated to the new world in 1680. So far as I have seen, Abraham is the ancestor of the numerous Rut(t)ans now in North America. His direct ancestry, with siblings, is shown below.

From the archives in Metz and Saint Mihiel, Grand Amorial de France, and Nobiliaire de la Lorraine et du Barrois I have collected an enormous amount of additional information on various branches of the Rutan families. I will not post that on the web, but welcome questions.

Various Rutans became nobles under Lorraine and later France. The earliest I have found is Nicolas Rutant, ennobled in Saint Mihiel on 12 Mar 1567 by Grand Duke Charles of Lorraine. The entry says he received this honor because the family had been nobility in England.
