Wilhelminastraat, Amsterdam

Before his departure for the US, Daan lived at Wilhelminastraat 71 in the apartment with the window box - on the 3rd floor. That would be the fourth in American terms.

The building is in an area developed in the second half of the 19th century. Nearby is the large Vondelpark. The neighborhood appears to still be a quality place to live, with lots of shops and restaurants and good public transportation. Daan was working for a freight forwarder handling shipments to Germany. His office job required him to talk to people in Germany on a daily basis.

The beams protruding from the gables are quite functional - they are used to help move large items (sofas, etc) to the various floors. The stairs are fairly narrow, and there are no lifts (elevators) in these buildings.
